How does GIF background removal work?

An AI segmentation model analyzes each frame of your GIF individually, separating the foreground (people, objects, etc.) from the background, then makes the background transparent. The whole process runs in your browser, and the frames are reassembled into a new GIF using gif.js.

Why does this take so long?

The AI model analyzes each frame individually, and a typical animated GIF has dozens of frames. Since the same per-frame analysis time is repeated for every frame, the total processing time scales up with frame count.

Does this work on mobile?

Yes, but processing time varies a lot depending on device performance. Newer, high-end phones tend to be reasonably fast, while older or lower-end devices can take tens of seconds per frame, adding up to several minutes overall. For the fastest results, we recommend using a desktop browser.

Is my file uploaded to a server?

No. GIF background removal runs entirely in your browser — the file you upload, and the result you download, are never sent to or stored on any server, so it's safe to use even with private or unreleased content.

Why are the edges a bit rough?

The GIF format only supports fully transparent or fully opaque pixels — there's no partial transparency — so edges can look more stair-stepped than in formats like PNG or WebP. This is most noticeable around fine details like hair or fur.

Can I cancel while it's processing?

Yes. You can click "Cancel" at any point during processing to stop the job. Canceling returns you to the previous screen, and your original GIF is untouched so you can start over anytime.

The background isn't fully removed — some of it is still showing.

Complex backgrounds, backgrounds with colors similar to the subject, or low-resolution GIFs can make it harder for the AI to draw a clean boundary. You'll generally get the most accurate results with GIFs that have a simple background and clear contrast against the subject.

Will the frame count or playback speed change in the result?

No. The original number of frames and each frame's delay (playback timing) are preserved exactly. Only the background becomes transparent — the animation's timing and loop settings stay the same.

Can I process multiple GIFs at once?

Not currently — you can process one GIF file at a time. To remove backgrounds from several GIFs, upload and process each one individually.

Can I use the downloaded GIF directly in other editing tools?

Yes. The output is saved as a standard GIF89a file, so it opens with its transparent background intact in most image and video editors, as well as other GIF editing tools.

What should I do if background removal fails or errors out?

If you hit an error, you'll be returned to the upload screen — check that the GIF file isn't corrupted and that your browser is up to date, then try again. Very large GIFs with a huge number of frames can fail due to your device running out of memory; if that happens, try again with a GIF that has fewer frames.
