How does GIF background removal work?

An AI segmentation model analyzes each frame of the GIF individually to separate the foreground (people, objects, etc.) from the background, making only the background transparent. This entire process runs inside your browser and is reassembled into a GIF file using gif.js.

Why does it take so long?

This is because the AI model analyzes the background frame by frame. Since GIF animations usually consist of dozens of frames, the time required to analyze a single frame multiplies by the total frame count, lengthening the overall processing time.

Can I use it on mobile devices?

Yes, you can, but the processing time varies greatly depending on device performance. While it finishes relatively quickly on high-end modern devices, older or low-spec devices may take tens of seconds per frame, resulting in several minutes of total processing time. For fast results, we recommend using a PC (desktop) browser.

Are files sent to a server?

No. GIF background removal is processed 100% within your browser. Since uploaded files and processing results are never sent or saved to a server, you can safely use it for images with sensitive personal or copyright information.

The edges of the result look rough and not smooth.

The GIF format can only express either fully transparent or fully opaque pixels (semi-transparency is not supported), which can make edges appear more stepped or jagged compared to formats like PNG or WebP. This limitation can be more prominent on thin and complex outlines like hair.

Can I cancel during processing?

Yes, you can click the "Cancel" button at any time while processing is underway to stop the task. Canceling returns you to the previous screen, and your original GIF remains intact so you can start over.

The background is not completely removed and some parts remain.

With complex backgrounds, backgrounds similar in color to the subject, or low-resolution GIFs, the AI may fail to distinguish the boundaries perfectly. GIFs with simple backgrounds and sharp contrast with the subject yield more accurate results.

Do the frame count or playback speed of the resulting GIF change from the original?

No, the original GIF's frame count and the playback speed (delay) of each frame are kept intact. Only the background becomes transparent, while the animation timing and loop settings remain unchanged.

Can I process multiple GIFs at once?

No, currently only one GIF file can be processed at a time. To remove backgrounds from multiple GIFs, you must upload and process each file individually.

Can I use the downloaded GIF directly in other editing tools?

Yes, since it is saved in the standard GIF89a format, most image/video editing programs or other GIF editing tools can import it directly while maintaining the transparent background.

What should I do if background removal fails or an error occurs?

If an error occurs, you will be returned to the upload screen. Please check if the GIF file is corrupted and whether your browser is up to date, then try again. Large GIFs with a very high frame count may fail due to insufficient device memory, so in this case, we recommend trying again with a GIF that has a reduced frame count.
